Fortune Cards

(Redirected from Fortune card)

The Fortune Cards, or simply Fortunes, are in-game challenges and, simultaneously, a type of collectibles in Gigantic and Gigantic: Rampage Edition. Each card has a task which after completion will award the player with Prestige , Crowns and other rewards, as well as reveal a part of game's lore.

Overview

In Gigantic: Rampage Edition Fortune Cards, and thus their challenges, are presented in 3 types: General, Hero and Weekly. They differ in how and when player can be complete them. Furthermore, cards are divided by tiers indicating difficulty of the task and the size of the reward, and alter visual appearance of cards:

  • Apprentice, where cards have normal colored artworks
  • Journeyman, where cards get gold foiling
  • Guardian, where cards get bright purple galaxy overlay

The challenges are completed in order, i.e. the player must complete Apprentice tier before being able to receive Journeyman tier, and so on. The progress from previously completed tier doesn't add to the next.

The rewards given to players range from Crown coins and hero and profile experience points to customization items, such as skins, portraits, emotes and titles. Once completed, the game will reveal a short lore snippet tied to the card.

Player can keep track of specific challenges of their choice by adding them into Watched Fortunes set, up to 3 cards at given time. The total amount of all fortunes cards in the game, counting all tiers, is 1,689.

General Fortunes

General Fortunes contain challenges which can be completed by playing any hero, anytime, as they're always tracked by the game. Upon completion they reveal details about the world of the game. They consist of:

  • The Initiation set of 4 cards, which work as introduction to the game for new players, with tasks mostly related to completing tutorials and guides.
  • The rest cards are all individual with unique tasks - 22 of them, with order numbers ranging from 0 to XXI.

The total amount of General challenges is 78, counting all tiers, with large majority of them granting only as a reward.

Hero Fortunes

Hero Fortunes can be completed only by playing certain hero, but also always tracked by the game. As the name suggest, their lore snippets are closely tied to heroes. These challenges will reward players with , or hero related customization, and points. They can be further divided on following sets:

  • Hero specific cards, which share same artworks and titles with different order numbers; their lore snippets are closely tied to the character and can be considered biographical.
  • Story specific cards, while strictly tied to a hero for completion, belong to sets of lore cards, artwork and flavor text wise.

The total amount of Hero challenges is 1,500 (60 cards with all tiers per hero).

Weekly Fortunes

Weekly Fortunes are time limited challenges: player gets 3 random cards of that type and have a week to complete them, before getting new set of cards. Some of them can be completed by any hero, some are hero specific. There are 3 types of Weekly Fortune Cards:

  • Lore cards which touch upon ongoing story of the game and form larger sets of cards along with some of Hero Fortunes; these challenges include both gameplay specific tasks, similarly to General Fortunes, and certain hero picks.
  • More complex gameplay related challenges; their lore delves into the Empire.
  • "Play and Win" - the simplest type of Fortunes which progress by just playing and winning matches; their lore snippets reveal more details about lands of Gig and creatures inhabiting it.

The total amount of Weekly challenges is 111, counting all tiers.

Previous versions

Original

In original version of Gigantic Fortune Cards were divided by two categories. Cards based upon the world belonged to Major Arcana, which then was divided to Low (from 0 to X) and High (from XI to XII); in Rampage Edition these cards became a part of General Fortunes. Cards based upon heroes belonged to Minor Arcana. Then cards are divided by 3 rarity levels, which would reward player with a designated amount of rubies on completion, on top of Crowns and Prestige points:

  • Common – +50
  • Rare – +100
  • Legendary – +300

Overall amount of all available in the game cards, counting all rarities, was 549. Player could have a hand of maximum 7 cards to complete in a time. To get a new card player had to make a draw, which gave 3 random cards to choose from. Draws could be obtained through various means:

With each draw, the chances of receiving a rare or legendary card increases. However, the chances of receiving a card that has not yet been completed decreases. Lore snippets were visible not only on completion but in draw menu as well.

Beta and development

During closed Beta of Gigantic the Fortune Cards system was largely same as in the final version. Players were supposed to purchase "card readings" from "fortune teller", a non-playable character who eventually became a playable hero.[1] The game at this stage also included "The Initiation" set, or "Starter Cards",[2] which were re-introduced in Rampage Edition. The "Lore Cards" were part of larger quest system to go with story themed monthly updates. The system wasn't developed in time (thus making updates just content centered),[3][4] but the cards made a comeback and got expanded in Rampage Edition as part of Weekly and Hero Fortunes.

There also were plans to give cards animated artworks or rarity based materials, thus making them more interactive in single card inspection; click on images in the gallery bellow to see animations:

In Beta builds some cards had additional lore snippets which weren't used or were reworded later:

  • The Jester: When dealing with House Melkior, you will not see a name or face. A vague title, like Child of the Serpent, will be used in the mysterious messages that appear.
  • The Magician: A House Devaedra noble with no gift for magic is not without options: death and exile are equally acceptable choices.
  • The Hierophant: “Heal your enemy and mend his heart.” - Hierophant Jhuris.
  • The Twins: Rather than colonizing new lands, Tesserus engineers explore to gather new ideas and technologies and then bring them back to the Forge.
  • The Sky Chariot: Swift Tesserus airships are the foundation of its wealth and power. The airships and the cannons they carry.
  • Justice: Pragmatism is House Karakesh's highest virtue, though some say those of House Karakesh are unimaginative or unrefined.
  • The Hermit: Rumors persist of rogue scientists in secret laboratories where House Tesserus has creations forbidden by the anti-technology Twelve Edicts.
  • Wheel of Fortune: Long ago, a clever baron seized the masked visitor that came to collect payment for a Melkior favor. The baron's family line has long since vanished. His once-proud castle lies in ruins to this day.
  • Strength: House Karakesh possesses the most military might in the empire. Heroism is a rite of passage for nobles and freedmen born into this house.
  • Temperance: House Aurion believes in conquest by conversion. A house of healing may win the kind of loyalty an invading army never could.
  • The Beast: Just find and kill Tomas, the Altered Beast...
  • The Tower: The Rift had been thought uninhabitable before Devaedra built her tower there. Now they say ‘inhospitable’ instead.
  • The Star: Touched by the light of the heart star, the beasts were reborn as Guardians, shepherds of land, sea, and sky.
  • The Moon: Melkior’s leaders are masters of subterfuge, it’s often its own worst enemy, split by internal plotting and strife.
  • The Sun: House Aurion favors griffons, which are native to the Alabaster Mount. The griffon and the sun are the emblems on their banner.

Trivia

  • Fortune Cards are based on famous Tarot cards, which are often used in divination and other esoteric practices. This can be seen in “arcana” terms, numerical order and some of the titles – both actual and seen only as code names (such as “the Hierophant”, or “the Beast” replacing “the Devil”).
  • Despite General Fortunes not getting divided in Rampage Edition, in game's files they still go by original grouping of Major Low and Major High arcana.
  • Oru, one of playable characters of Gigantic, is deeply related to Fortune Cards in various ways:
    • Oru is an Eternal that specializes in seeing the future – the cards are his primary instrument, as well as the weapon: “Judgment” for BURN
      Deals damage over time.
      buring
      enemies, "The Beast" for SLOW
      Reduces movement speed by 20%.
MAJOR SLOW (30%) and MASSIVE SLOW (60%) are more powerful.
      slowing
them, “the Joker” (originally titled as “the Jester”) to PUSH
Knocks enemies back. This does not stop them from using skills.
      push
them away, and “Death” to deal mortal DAMAGE
Decreases target's HEALTH or SHIELD with successful attacks and leads to target's death after its health bar reaches 0.
      damage
      .
    • As mentioned earlier, Oru was originally designed as an non-playable character, a crystal ball through which players could “see into the future,” and from which they would draw Fortune Cards. Oru would then react to player's picks with various responses.[1]
    • An entity on "The Jester" card resembles Oru, who is referred in card's lore notes as "The Seer" – his name as the member of Eternal pantheon.
